Thriving In Thessalonica

Thriving In Thessalonica Sermon Audio Here

1 Thessalonians 2:9-13

In our first week looking at First Thessalonians, we tested thankfulness. Our second week, we measured motive. Today, we talk about flourishing faith:

Faith That Thrives Or Is Merely Alive: What’s The Difference?

Living Faith Is FUSED With Life ~ 1 Thessalonians 2:9-11

  • 9 preached=heralded; called out the truth; while working among them, the gospel was talked about (less pulpit, more participation)
  • 10 among you: Paul & team immersed themselves in the lives of others
  • 11 like a good father does

Thriving Faith is USED Throughout Life ~ 1 Thessalonians 2:12-13

  • 12 encouraging, comforting, urging: father/pastor/coach => movement towards worth/value
  • 13 the Word “which is at work”; we’re not intended to just sit

How do we know that God has ACTUALLY called us? How do we know that our FAITH is real (and we’re not just fooling ourselves)? Because we CHANGE. We’re DIFFERENT. The presence of God’s Grace does something in us, and we walk with God into His Kingdom.

Hebrews 7:20-28

Hebrews 6 is about the need to grow in your faith to inherit God’s promises; chapter 7 is about how God makes promises and implemented them through priests like Melchizedek, and how Jesus is the ultimate example of that priesthood.

Jesus is God’s Promise To Us

That Our Salvation Will Last Forever
(Heb. 7:20-24)

  • v20 emphasis on oath: a guarded promise to fulfill an obligation
  • v21 God the Father made a binding promise to God the Son: you will be the go-between
  • v22 guarantee= the incentive to trust God
  • v23/24 human flesh fades; Jesus is forever

That Our Savior Will Shape Our Present
(Heb. 7:25-28)

  • v25 save completely; no area of your life that can’t be changed by Jesus
  • v26 last week emphasized how Jesus was human like us; this week, we see Jesus is ALSO God like the Father
  • v27 change of direction: old system was from sinful humanity to perfect God.
  • v28 NEW system: sacrifice started from perfect God to sinful humanity

All too often, we’re overcome by our tendency to fall back into sin. This is serious, but it is not terminal. God KNOWS we stumble and fall. He KNOWS we fail Him, and don’t live “in victory”. But the battle is not OURS to win or lose; it’s already been won by Jesus for the Father. The Spirit allows us to access Jesus’ victory over death and sin. He allows us to go between our old fallen life and our new risen reality. All we need do is surrender our old life daily and follow Him.
