Preaching Schedule for 2015

Every year in the fall, I try to get away and prepare for the upcoming material that we, as a church congregation, will be learning. I try to select the texts from which I’ll preach, read through them, and come up with basic themes which will guide my preparation time in the coming year.

Every other year, the idea was to submit to the discipline of using the Revised Common Lectionary, as a way to ensure that our congregation isn’t just studying texts that are *my* personal favorites. The Lectionary texts are used all over the world, and it’s always a bit of a challenge to read through them all, and seek guidance on what we’ll study together as a church body.

If you’re really interested, you can go to The Revised Common Lectionary at Vanderbilt to see what texts we’ll be using for the particular day.

Ecclesiastes 7:15-23
“Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the main event, in the category of the meaning of life here on planet Earth, presiding over this match we have the Holy Spirit, the King of Kings and the Father of All, (pause) Now in the red corner, with a professional record of with numerous wins in the lives of fools, from the heart of the Adversary but living in countless minds all over the world, please welcome the Concept of Wickedness! (Pause) The opponent in the blue corner with a professional record of the Ultimate Win, through the work of the Son of God, and found in the lives of the saints, from before the beginning of time, please welcome the Concept of Righteousness!”

How Do We Live in the Midst of Struggle?

Find Your Sweet Spot In The Middle
Ecc. 7:15-23 We have to get out of the corner!

  • v16/17 – Don’t be holier than thou, or a smart-alec, and don’t be mr. wicked; live in the middle (which is where the fight is!)
  • v20 don’t pretend to be perfect, we all know better
  • v23 we know we’re going to fall short; don’t obsess about it

Bring Your Best To The Conflict
Rom. 12:3-8 Don’t just show up; TRAIN

  • v3 sober judgment w/ faith; admit weakness and strengths
  • v4/5 we are a TEAM – not just individuals (wrestling points)
  • v6/8 prophesying = proclaimer of divine concerns
    • serving = service as attendant, aide, or assistant
    • teaching = regardless of setting
    • encouraging = urge strongly, appeal to, urge, exhort
    • contributing = to give WITH (larger than ourselves)
    • leadership = exercise a position of leadership
    • mercy = be greatly concerned about someone in need

Let’s USE our spiritual gifts in the midst of life’s struggle! When all is said and done, the Fight has ultimately already been Won by One!

Preaching Schedule for 2013

One of the things I’ve learned as a solo pastor is the need to plan ahead when it’s possible. For those of you who have known me for years, you’re probably laughing out loud right now, or you’re trying to recover from shock. Nevertheless, I’ve discovered that if I plan out my preaching schedule in advance, I’m better equipped to deal with any pastoral emergencies that might arise.

Wonder of wonder; miracle of miracles! The administration of ministry frees me to do the interaction of ministry!

For the past two years, I’ve plotted out the preaching schedule based on book studies, with the very occasional topical study thrown in. This year, I thought I’d push myself a bit, and submit to the discipline of preaching the Revised Common Lectionary. The Lectionary is simply a collection of Scriptures that, over a three-year course, cover the Bible. Our church already uses some of its forms – we have an Old Testament reading, a New Testament reading, and our call to worship is based in the Psalms, so we have quite a lot of Scripture even before we get to the sermon!

This coming year (Year A, in the RCL), I thought I’d use the Lectionary to select the texts themselves. I went away for a couple of days on a study retreat, and read through the year’s worth of texts, and looked for patterns and themes. I then took the ideas that I’d found, and put them into a schedule.

If you’re really interested, you can go to The Revised Common Lectionary at Vanderbilt to see what texts we’ll be using for the particular day.

Creative Sermon Partnering

Hey everyone –
Have you ever been listening to a sermon, and thought: “oh, if the pastor had only told me what he was going to be preaching on… I have a perfect song/movie clip/painting/object lesson that would have fit perfectly with that sermon!”

I know I’ve thought that when listening to other pastors during their sermons. SO…

I’m posting the Scriptures, Sermon Titles, and general topics for the next couple of month’s worth of sermons. If you get a great idea of how you could contribute to our time together in the Word, please let me know.

  • Readers, have you ever listened to a sermon and been reminded of something you’ve read – perhaps a few lines from a favorite story, or poem? We could incorporate that into the sermon!
  • Artists, you could create a work that could be used as a bulletin cover, or as a contemplative piece to be seen in the foyer as people enter.
  • Singers, if you know a song that fits with the sermon topic, and you’d like to sing special music, that would be great!
  • Media junkies – do you have a youtube clip or movie clip that would really illustrate a concept you find in the Scriptures we’ll be working with? We’ve got access to a projector… we just need someone to find the content!
  • Dancers – I’d love to see some “liturgical dance” to go with a sermon. I think there’s enough room on our platform for that… interested?

I hope those suggestions create some interest. The interesting thing about posting this concept on the web is that anyone who reads it could contribute to the sermon process; one does not necessarily need to be attending the service to suggest reading materials, movie clips, or appropriate songs. (However, long-distance interpretive liturgical dance is right out.)

Here are the Upcoming Sermon Scriptures & Topics:
10/17/10
Mark 3:13-35, Psalm 138:1-8; “Family Feud, 30 A.D.”, dealing with family conflicts

10/24/10
Mark 4:1-25, Isaiah 55:6-13; “Sow Far, Sow Good”, the parable of the Sower – how important is soil preparation for planting?

10/31/10
Mark 4:26-34, Ezekiel 17:22-24; “Trees A Crowd”, when little faith gets big results

11/07/10
Mark 4:35-41, Job 38:1-11, 25-29, 34-35; “Stilling the Storm” – how do we deal with external problems in our lives?

11/14/10
Mark 5:1-20, Psalm 42; “Dealing with Inner Demons” – how do we deal with internal problems in our lives?

11/21/10
Mark 5:21-43, Lamentations 3:22-33; “How Much Faith is Enough?” – how does faith work in our lives?

That takes us up to Advent.

Please, chime in, everyone… I’d love to see what we could do together in our times in the Word!
