Daily Disciplines for the Christian Life: Get Your Mission

Get Your Mission

Exodus 19:1-6; Acts 1:4-8

Vicktor Frankl, Auschwitz survivor, wrote “Man’s Search For Meaning” – he learned that identifying a purpose in life to feel positive about, and then immersively imagining that outcome, gave hope to the hopeless, even in concentration camps. Frankl discovered that the very last thing anyone can take from you is your freedom of choice. YOU CHOOSE how you will respond to suffering, to enjoyment, to living and dying. Want to find your purpose? Get Your Mission!

To Choose Your Role In Life:

* TREASURE Your Position ~ Exodus 19:1-6

(don’t seek it, BE it)

  • 1/3 God’s people are given a message: specifics are for Israel, principles are for US
  • 4/5 set your priorities; IF keep covenant, THEN treasured “favorite tool-impact wrench”
  • 6 result of proper priorities: holy service

* PLAY Your Position ~ Acts 1:4-8

(what is your position on God’s team?)

  • 4 discovering your gifts
  • 5 Holy Spirit IS the gift; HS is ALSO the giver of gifts (Rom 12:1-8; 1 Cor 12-14; Eph. 4:7-16; 1Pet 4:10-11)
  • 6 identifying your passion; what are we looking towards?
  • 7/8 discerning your call; WHO will you seek? WHAT will you say? WHY would you share? WHERE are you going?

WHEN? Time is NOW: Position → Fruition → Passion → Commission

Autumn Thoughts:The Intimacy of Service

The Intimacy of Service

John 13:1-20

The Dead Sea is so salty that it contains no fish or plant life. What accounts for this unusual condition? There are absolutely no outlets! A great volume of water pours into this area, but nothing flows out. Many inlets plus no outlets equal a dead sea.

Some “Christians” are like the Dead Sea. They have several “inlets” but no “outlets.” To be vibrant and useful believers, we must not only “take in” all we can, but we must also “give out” in service to others!

Every Christian Should Expect

* The Inconvenience of Intimacy ~ John 13:1-11

  • 1/3 Jesus loves ON PURPOSE; He KNOWS terrible things are going to happen, but shows love anyway
  • 4/5 uncomfortable intimacy then; what response today?
  • 6/8 Peter knows how inappropriate this feels! Jesus’ response? “you don’t know what I’m doing” – DO WE?
  • 9/11 this was never about cleanliness, or even intimacy: this is about the cost of caring for others: this is LOVE in ACTION – WHOSE FEET DO YOU WASH? WHO DO YOU UNCOMFORTABLY SERVE?

* The Submission to Service ~ John 13:12-20

  • 12 We STILL grapple with this question “do you understand what I have done for you” DO WE?
  • 13/15 Jesus EXPECTS us to follow His example
  • 16/17 Be honest: do you tell yourself “I’m too good for *that*”? WHEN you do, what do you give up? WHAT BLESSINGS HAVE WE MISSED?
  • 18/20 Jesus USED His Pain to Point to God’s Promise

Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow. (Isaiah 1:16-17) NONE OF THESE ARE PASSIVE, NONE ARE PRIVATE – Jesus expected it and did it; why aren’t we?

Out of the Ordinary: Gone To Seed

Out of the Ordinary: Gone To Seed

Luke 8:4-15

This is a pretty familiar parable. Lots of teaching available on it; significant challenge to “come up with something new” when preaching it. But sometimes, I’ve got to let go of the desire to be “innovative” and just look at the facts: Jesus still challenges us to go deeper than the surface. That’s actually the whole POINT of this parable…

What’s Below The Surface?

The Story ~ Luke 8:4-8

.This is where Jesus tells the parable itself. Listen to it again.

The Substance ~ Luke 8:9-15

  • 9/10 how many hear, but don’t LISTEN?
  • 11/12 this seed is good, but not planted
  • 13 this seed is planted, but only surface depth
  • 14 this seed is deep enough, but in competition for resources
  • 15 this seed: planted, rooted, nourished, and maintained to harvest reproduces itself many fold (average corn kernel return is 800%!)

The Significance

All The Seed Is Good (100% germination rate)

CLOSE: The seed doesn’t bear fruit without the soil. The soil doesn’t produce fruit without the seed. What this is describing is the MERGER of the Word and US:

Romans 6:5-7~ 5If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. 6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin–7because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

James 1:21~ 21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

Purpose Driven Plus One: Ministry

Matthew 5:43-48; Leviticus 19:9-18

From Rick Warren’s message on Ministry~ Priscilla Presley, wife of famed singer Elvis Presley, said this in an interview: “Elvis never came to terms with who or what he was meant to be or what his purpose in life was. He thought he was here for a reason; maybe to preach, or to save, or to serve and care for people, and that agonizing desire was always in him… and he knew he wasn’t fulfilling it. So he’d go on stage and he wouldn’t have to think about it. Elvis hadn’t a clue about where to begin to look. In a sense, he was lost.” Elvis was successful, but not fulfilled.

Be A Person On Purpose:

See Kingdom Standards ~ Matthew 5:43-47
This is Jesus’ teaching pattern for the Kingdom in the Sermon on the Mount

  • 43 Level of Law (entry level: the bare minimum)
  • 44/45 Goal of Godliness (achievement unlocked!)
  • 46/47 Practice of Piety (how do we get there?)

Live Kingdom Concepts ~ Leviticus 19:9-18

  • 9/10 more than just “feed the poor” PLAN to help others
  • 11/12 reminders: section doesn’t replace 10 Commandments; it’s a COMMENTARY on the Commandments; You are now reading the Law- more complex than you thought
  • 13 “Do Not Cheat or Swindle”
  • 14 “Do Not Taunt”
  • 15 “Be Fair to ALL” (don’t pander to the poor, or revere the rich)
  • 16 “Do Not Slander or Endanger”
  • 17 “Do Not Hate; Reason Rightly”
  • 18 “Release Revenge”; Love Like Your Life Depended On It

Matthew 5:48: “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” This is the Completion of Christlikeness.

Ecclesiastes 12:9-14
To Deal With Despair, Remember

The Point to Our Purpose
Ecc. 12:9-14 After all is said and done, WHY?

  • v9/10 gather wisdom to give it away
  • v11 given wisdom is from the Shepherd
  • v13 “the whole of man” not duty, but purpose
  • – to love God is why we’re here!

The Steadfastness of the Shepherd
John 10:11-18 look at who He is; what He does; and what He has

  • who He is: v11,14 He is the good Shepherd (protector, provider, pathfinder)
  • what He does: v14,15 He knows us, He knows the Father, He lays His life down for us
  • what He has: v16,18 He has ONE flock, He has ONE life, He has authority lay it down and take it up (cf. 10:10) ABUNDANT LIFE!

Mars Rover Opportunity was only designed to function for 90 days using solar power. When its solar collectors got covered by dust, it would shut down; whenever a strong wind would blow the dust off, it could once again receive energy from the sun. It’s now been going almost 11 years past its expected duration.

Our lesson: no matter how tough life gets, let the wind blow, and stay in the Son!
