1 Peter 2:2-10

Praise seems pretty important to God. Even Jesus said that if people didn’t praise God, even the stones would cry out.

Why Should We Care About Praise?

You Have A Reason To Be ~ 1 Peter 2:2-6

  • v2 There’s a word not explicitly translated in the NIV: “OF THE WORD”; Peter isn’t calling us babies; he’s saying that in the way a baby craves milk, we need to crave the unadulterated Word of God; simple and pure; as babies grow when they drink milk, Christians grow when they take in the Word
  • v3 when we recognize God’s goodness, graciousness, THEN we can accept His word; if a person only ever sees a distorted picture of the Lord, they won’t want God in their lives – why would they?
  • v4 “as you are coming” (emphasizes participation)
  • v5 “you are being built… to be” as you show up, God notices and uses you; PRIESTHOOD – the group of people who represent God to humanity, and humanity to God
  • v6 As we are connected to Christ, and He is the Cornerstone, God builds His Temple on THAT foundation. The purpose of a temple: to meet God and interact with Him there. Our praise, our worship, our lives are a part of how the world understands who Jesus is.
=> Bad news: we can get in the way, and become the distorted picture of Christ that people reject. Good news: we’re the example that God will save ANYBODY!

God Has A Role For You ~ 1 Peter 2:7-10

  • v7 the world rejects Jesus because He is the standard… and they want THEMSELVES to be the standard; they have to admit they’re out of alignment, and that’s tough to do
  • v8 when they can’t accept the Word, they stumble; when they stumble, they fall – that’s how it works
  • v9 BUT YOU (hallelujah!) have been chosen to PRAISE

CLOSE: v10 “once upon a time” – you can tell the story, the old old story of Jesus and His love that saves (present tense) you!

Luke 2:22-38

As Our Lives Unfold, We Discover:

Simple Faithfulness Leads to Praise
Luke 2:22-32

  • v22/24 Mary and Joseph, presenting their child, were moved by the Word
  • v25/27 Simeon, waiting for Messiah to appear, was moved by the Spirit
  • v28/32 Simeon was moved to praise God by Mary & Joseph’s faithfulness to the Word

Lifelong Faithfulness Leads to Reflection
Luke 2:33-38

  • v33/35 Reminder: Life of Faith not always easy
  • v36/38 Reminder: Life of Faith not always fast; God’s time, not ours

The rest of the chapter gives us a snapshot of Jesus’ life as a boy; He was living out a life of faithfulness as He saw modeled from His earthly parents. Vs 52: He grew in stature and favor with God and man. May our lives unfold in such a way that this is true of us as well.

Whatever Is Praiseworthy

the Whatevers of Philippians 4:8
Ephesians 1:3-10

I have been working on memorizing Philippians 4:8 for about 30 years. I’ve had difficulty getting all fo the “whatevers” in order in my head. That’s one of the main reasons I decided on this sermon series – to help me wrap my head around the contents of Philippians 4:8. I found that I can remember the contents with the word “PEALPRiNT”. It’s the contents of the verse in backwards order. I turn PEALPRiNT around, to get T,N,R,P,L,A,E,P – True, Noble, Right, Pure, Lovely, Admirable, Excellent, Praiseworthy. It might seem silly, but I find that coming up with little challenges like this really helps in memory work.

As we’re led to consider the last word in this verse, we ask:

What Prompts A Response of Praise?

Praise in the Presence of God
Psalm 85:8-13 ~ Psalm deals with what is needed for revival

  • v8 we listen for the Word of God
  • v9 remember: salvation is for God’s glory
  • v10-11 results of God’s presence with us: love, faithfulness, righteousness, & peace
  • v13 our borrowed righteousness prepares people for His presence

Praise for the Providence of God
Ephesians 1:3-6 ~  God looks out for us – for His sake!

  • v3 God gives every spiritual blessing
  • v4 first blessing is being chosen to receive holiness
  • v5 through adoption (His choice, not ours)
  • v6 He is worthy because of His gracious choice

Praise for the Purpose of God
Ephesians 1:7-10 ~ What does God intend for us?

  • v7 to buy us back into freedom from sin
  • v8 He knows our worth (even when we don’t)
  • v9 His work in us clues us in; we are being changed
  • v10 so that we will be brought to Christ for HIS glory

What is God’s most fervent desire? Reconciliation of the Lost with Him. “Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, Calling for you and for me.”

Philippians 4:8 – “Finally, my brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if there is anything excellent or praiseworthy, let your mind dwell on these things.”
