Up From The Grave He Arose!

Up From The Grave He Arose! Sermon Audio Here

Isaiah 25:6-9; John 20:19-31

For many children, the highlight of Easter morning is the Easter Basket. For many parents, the choices on what to put IN the Easter Basket are overwhelming. While retailers put pastel colored candy and toys front and center, other voices advocate for different choices: art supplies instead of candy; vegan alternatives to eggs; even replacing the basket itself with a backpack or canvas storage container.

All of this attention on what’s in the Easter basket begs the question:

What Does God Give Us on Easter?

The Promise of Restoration ~ Isa. 25:6-9

  • v7 we are shrouded- covering of death
  • v8 we WILL be restored- tears wiped away
  • v9 let us rejoice- our intentional response

The Peace in Reception ~ John 20:19-23

  • v19 we can choose to live in fear
  • v20 we can choose to look at the Lord instead
  • v21/22/23 we can have peace when we receive what Jesus gives

The Principle of Reliance ~ John 20:24-31

  • v24/25 we tend to rely on ourselves
  • v26/27 Jesus knows our tendency for self-reliance
  • v28/29 reliance upon God is a blessing
  • v30/31 reliance upon God gives us life-removes the shroud

Are you living under a shroud? Is your self-reliance keeping you from life? Jesus rolled away the stone and left His shroud behind; He can do it for YOU, too!

Covenant Concepts ~ Congregation: Respond in Rejoicing

Covenant Concepts ~ Congregation: Responds in Rejoicing Sermon Audio Here

Isaiah 50:4-9a; John 12:12-16

As we consider the ancient practices of covenant, we are reminded that the stronger party would force the weaker party to walk a blood-soaked path. However, on Palm Sunday, we see a reverse picture of covenant; Jesus in the middle of the crowd (stronger party going through weaker party).

God Frames Relationships With Covenant Concepts

Respond to the Mission of the Master
Isa. 50:4-9a ~ Song of the Suffering Servant

  • v4/5 Listen to the Lord
  • v6/7 Find Resolve in Faith
  • v8/9 Presume the Presence of God (remember that God is always close)

Rejoice in Recognition of the Redeemer
John 12:12-16 ~ Song for the Sacrificial Savior

  • v12/13 Hosanna – plea to save! Blessed is he… pilgrims coming to temple SO…
  • Approach Worship with Anticipation
  • v14/15 donkey=peace; SO….
  • Recognize the Value of Peace (Zech. 9:9-10)
  • v16 peace through payment: Jesus came as a worshiper AND as the sacrifice; SO…
  • Realize Your Redemption

We are redeemed because of the obedience of Christ; HIS response and submission to God’s will makes possible OUR response and submission to God’s will. Jesus made it possible for us to be brought to life; is it any wonder that we still cry “Hosanna”?

Practical Sanctification

Isaiah 61:1-11
A farmer, when training a new hand, says: “watch me; pay attention”. The new hand WILL be expected to do the job for which he is being trained.

How is God Making Us Holy?

Through The Mission of the Messiah
Isa. 61:1-4 What did Jesus come to DO?

  • v1 HE binds hearts, proclaims freedom, sets prisoners free
  • v2 shout grace & warn wrath, comfort the mourning
  • v3 provides for the grieving; exchanges beauty for ashes, gladness for mourning, praise for despair
  • v4 result for those who receive His ministry: righteousness that withstands storms for God’s glory
  • v5 THEY become rebuilders and restorers, they will renew the world by God’s grace

By The Means of the Messiah
Isa. 61:8-11 How did Jesus’ faithfulness effect us?

  • v8/9 Yahweh to Messiah: HIS righteousness releases HIS faithfulness in us
  • v10 Messiah to Yahweh: God prepared Jesus as Messiah
  • v11 God does that same prep work in US as well!

With The Method of the Messiah
1 Thes. 5:16-24 What does this prep work look like?

  • v16/18 joyful prayers of thanksgiving always (joy: NOT happiness; a trust in the rightness of God’s plan which leads to a sense of well-being)
  • v19/20 don’t limit the work of the Spirit in you; listen for His voice!
  • v21/22 Double check what you hear; hold the good, reject the bad

Close: v23/24 God is making you holy; He does – we watch. We learn, we help, but He does the work IN & THROUGH us.

Holy in the Meantime

Isaiah 40:1-11

Over the triple doorways of the cathedral of Milan there are three inscriptions spanning the splendid arches. Over one is carved a beautiful wreath of roses, and underneath it is the legend, “All that which pleases is but for a moment.”
Over the other is sculptured a cross, and there are the words, “All that which troubles us is but for a moment.”
But underneath the great central entrance to the main aisle is the inscription, “That only is important which is eternal.”

If we always realize these three truths, we will not let trifles trouble us, not be interested so much in the passing pleasures of the hour. We should live for the permanent and the eternal.

To Make The Most of Our Meantime, Remember:

SOMEDAY All Will Be Set Right
Isa.40:1-11 Isaiah: God loves us too much to abandon us

      • v5 the glory WILL BE revealed
      • v6/8 we might not see it; we’re short-lived
      • v10/11 Lord comes with power and compassion, close to His heart

SOMEDAY Might Not Be TODAY
2 Pet. 3:8-15 What to do while we wait?

      • v8 God’s view of time and ours aren’t the same
      • v9 God patiently waits FOR US
      • v10 Day of the Lord is unknown and world changing, SO…
      • v11/12 live holy lives, set apart for God’s use
      • v13/14 new heaven & earth: WITH GOD –

His patience means our salvation, so while we wait, prepare for His presence!

Shaped By A Savior: Gifted with Grace

Isaiah 64:1-9
The Father is the Master Sculptor our lives. Sculptures are meant to be viewed; different lighting shows different details in the work. The Old Testament shows new light to illuminate the gospel, and helps us to see God at work in us, bringing the image of Jesus to the surface.

There are Three Presents We Must Unwrap NOW:

The Powerful Presence of the Lord
Isaiah 64:1-5a What does it look like when God shows up?

  • v1/3 look at the expressions of power: Nature reacts
  • v4 difference in little “g” gods and Lord Almighty? God Acts.
  • v5 righteousness and remembrance of God is key

The Significance of our Sin
Isaiah 64:5b-9 How do we respond in the presence of the Lord?

  • v6 self-generated righteousness is a bloody filthy mess
  • v7 our sin repels God; our fault, not His
  • v8 He loves us IN SPITE of our sin
  • v9 request: admit relationship AND repentance

The Gain of Grace
1 Corinthians 1:3-9 How does God compensate for our sin?

  • v3/4 Grace is given, not earned
  • v5/6 we’re enriched when Grace is at work
  • v7 y’all don’t lack WHEN TOGETHER
  • v8 He gives us all strength; together, we are un-accusable (not subject to Devil’s lies)
  • v9 fellowship with Jesus shows God’s faithfulness among us

Sculptors & Home renovation shows: both take great care in choosing the correct material for their projects. God, the master craftsman, has SPECIFICALLY CHOSEN YOU (flaws and all) to demonstrate some of His best work!

Leadership Thoughts: Isaiah 57

Brokenness

Devotion: Isaiah 57:14-19

14And it will be said: “Build up, build up, prepare the road! Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.”

15For this is what the high and lofty One says– he who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.

16I will not accuse forever, nor will I always be angry, for then the spirit of man would grow faint before me– the breath of man that I have created.

17I was enraged by his sinful greed; I punished him, and hid my face in anger, yet he kept on in his willful ways.

18I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will guide him and restore comfort to him,

19creating praise on the lips of the mourners in Israel. Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the LORD. “And I will heal them.”

These verses followed the passage in Isaiah that we looked at last week in the sermon. I was given a new-to-me set of commentaries from Pastor Joe, and was reading through the Isaiah volume, and was encouraged by what I read about chapter 57, as Isaiah tries to prepare God’s people for the time of salvation. Here’s what I found for us as leaders in our congregation:

  • Verse 14: “Build up; remove obstacles” – one of the challenges that we have as servant leaders in a congregational setting is to build up those who are already here, and to remove roadblocks that might prevent new people from joining us.

  • Verse 15: “high/holy & low/humble” – God’s perfect holiness is not something that we need to strive to attain; He’s already there. He works with us just as we are, and He is the one that shapes us.

  • Verse 16/17: God wants to *not* be angry, but when we cling to our sin instead of Him, we leave Him no choice; we cannot choose to flaunt our sin before a holy God without consequence.

  • Verse 18: And even so, God *actively* looks for ways to heal us; God-our-restorer uses broken people to minister to other broken people!

  • Verse 19: Changed lives result in praise to God; we who are being reconciled will see it in others. Watch for that praise that accompanies change, and encourage them.
