2 Corinthians: Strange Fire Overhead?

2 Corinthians: Strange Fire Overhead?

Lev.10:1-11; 2Cor.11:1-6

On January 28, 1986, the Challenger disaster occurred – all because an O-Ring was unable to flex in cold temperatures. It’s rigidness caused a tragedy when it couldn’t compensate for stress under ignition. How do WE compensate for stress?

To Handle Life’s Stress, Remember

Holiness is High Priority ~ Leviticus 10:1-5, 10-11
OT Principle: when those men did not take God’s holiness seriously, disaster struck!

  • 3 God vitally concerned about His holiness
  • 10/11 WE have to be carefully concerned about it as well

Purity Is Protective ~ 2Corinthians 11:1-6
NT Practice

  • 1/2 Paul isn’t GUILTING; he’s explaining his passion for their purity
  • 3 pure & sincere devotion is our core: what draws us away?
  • 4 why do we put up with false teaching easily enough? Because DILIGENCE IS HARD
  • 5/6 warning here: don’t be distracted by the “super-apostle”, the celebrity religious figure, the outward image of piety

We MUST take specific steps to protect the purity and holiness of our devotion to Christ – or we’ll be dragged off course with potentially disastrous results. What conversations have you had with those close to you this last month about your devotion to God?

Roaming Through Romans: Holiness Awakened

Roaming Through Romans: Holiness Awakened Sermon Audio Here

Romans 13:8-14

So far today, I’ve done all right.
I haven’t gossiped, lost my temper,
been greedy or grumpy, been nasty, selfish or overindulgent.
I’m very thankful for that.

But in a few minutes, God, I’m going to get out of bed,
and I’m going to need a LOT more help…

How Do You Awaken Holiness?

Go Deeper ~ Romans 13:8-10

  • 8 Paul’s restatement of Jesus’ answer: the most important law
  • 9/10 move the emphasis from LAW to LOVE

Get Going ~ Romans 13:11-14

  • 11 salvation’s opportunity has an END, and it’s getting closer! Wake up!
  • 12 armor=to be used in offense; weapon!
  • 13 behave=peripataomen; walk; careful journey on the way
  • 14 put on Jesus; don’t plan to fail in your flesh

About walking: a little child learns balance; a young person learns direction; but experience teaches us to focus on the finish line.

Isaiah 61:1-11
A farmer, when training a new hand, says: “watch me; pay attention”. The new hand WILL be expected to do the job for which he is being trained.

How is God Making Us Holy?

Through The Mission of the Messiah
Isa. 61:1-4 What did Jesus come to DO?

  • v1 HE binds hearts, proclaims freedom, sets prisoners free
  • v2 shout grace & warn wrath, comfort the mourning
  • v3 provides for the grieving; exchanges beauty for ashes, gladness for mourning, praise for despair
  • v4 result for those who receive His ministry: righteousness that withstands storms for God’s glory
  • v5 THEY become rebuilders and restorers, they will renew the world by God’s grace

By The Means of the Messiah
Isa. 61:8-11 How did Jesus’ faithfulness effect us?

  • v8/9 Yahweh to Messiah: HIS righteousness releases HIS faithfulness in us
  • v10 Messiah to Yahweh: God prepared Jesus as Messiah
  • v11 God does that same prep work in US as well!

With The Method of the Messiah
1 Thes. 5:16-24 What does this prep work look like?

  • v16/18 joyful prayers of thanksgiving always (joy: NOT happiness; a trust in the rightness of God’s plan which leads to a sense of well-being)
  • v19/20 don’t limit the work of the Spirit in you; listen for His voice!
  • v21/22 Double check what you hear; hold the good, reject the bad

Close: v23/24 God is making you holy; He does – we watch. We learn, we help, but He does the work IN & THROUGH us.
