Mark 13:24-37

I found this WONDERFUL way to remind myself of things: WakeUpDialer.com Just listen… Now, wouldn’t it be great if God gave us wake-up calls? Well…

Jesus Gives Us All A Wake-Up Call:

A Call For Caution ~ Mark 13:24-27

  • 24 This refers to The Day Of The Lord cf. Isa. 13:9-10
  • 25 CODE: not actual destruction of stellar objects; language used to denote the end of a ruling era (cf Ezk. 32; Amos 8; Joel 2 – diff. Kingdoms, same ending language)
  • 26 God WILL REIGN (cf. Dan 7:13)
  • 27 cf Deut 30:3-6 (God will gather & restore His people);
  •    Jer. 32:37 (God will bring us back to Himself);
  •    Ezk 34:13, 36:24 (God will bring His people to His land);
  •    Zech 2:6 (God scattered His people to the ends of the earth because of their disobedience, and He calls them back home)

A Call To Clarity ~ Mark 13:28-31

  • 28/29 Cause and effect: summer follows winter; God’s plans bear fruit
  • 30/31 “this generation” = within the lifetime of His followers. A.D. 70 certainly was; hold onto Jesus’ enduring word

A Call Of Self-Control ~ Mark 13:32-37

  • 32 that Day under control of the Father
  • 33/34 each with his assigned task: God has tasked US to be His servants
  • 35 four watches of the night, 6pm-6am
  • 36/37 “to watch for him is to… use the time that remains before his coming in the work of winning others for him. It is to recognize him gratefully in his intermediate comings in the persons of the least of his brethren.”1

We do not need to wait until Jesus’ return to live as Kingdom people NOW.

Posts from 1 Peter: Placed for Praise

Posts from 1 Peter: Placed for Praise Sermon Audio Here

1 Peter 2:2-10

Praise seems pretty important to God. Even Jesus said that if people didn’t praise God, even the stones would cry out.

Why Should We Care About Praise?

You Have A Reason To Be ~ 1 Peter 2:2-6

  • v2 There’s a word not explicitly translated in the NIV: “OF THE WORD”; Peter isn’t calling us babies; he’s saying that in the way a baby craves milk, we need to crave the unadulterated Word of God; simple and pure; as babies grow when they drink milk, Christians grow when they take in the Word
  • v3 when we recognize God’s goodness, graciousness, THEN we can accept His word; if a person only ever sees a distorted picture of the Lord, they won’t want God in their lives – why would they?
  • v4 “as you are coming” (emphasizes participation)
  • v5 “you are being built… to be” as you show up, God notices and uses you; PRIESTHOOD – the group of people who represent God to humanity, and humanity to God
  • v6 As we are connected to Christ, and He is the Cornerstone, God builds His Temple on THAT foundation. The purpose of a temple: to meet God and interact with Him there. Our praise, our worship, our lives are a part of how the world understands who Jesus is.
=> Bad news: we can get in the way, and become the distorted picture of Christ that people reject. Good news: we’re the example that God will save ANYBODY!

God Has A Role For You ~ 1 Peter 2:7-10

  • v7 the world rejects Jesus because He is the standard… and they want THEMSELVES to be the standard; they have to admit they’re out of alignment, and that’s tough to do
  • v8 when they can’t accept the Word, they stumble; when they stumble, they fall – that’s how it works
  • v9 BUT YOU (hallelujah!) have been chosen to PRAISE

CLOSE: v10 “once upon a time” – you can tell the story, the old old story of Jesus and His love that saves (present tense) you!

Luke 17:20-26

Let’s be honest: we pray every week for God’s Kingdom to be known on earth. Does the world in which we live remind you of life in Heaven? Why not?

We Hold Back The Coming Kingdom When

We Watch For The Wrong Signs
Luke 17:20-21

  • v20 Pharisees used same words, but different meanings; they understood the Kingdom of God to be a political victory over opposinging forces
  • v21 Jesus sets them straight: the KoG is INSIDE, not outside; it’s about voluntary surrender to the King of Heaven, not forced submission to a stronger external force

We Want The Wrong Person
Luke 17:22-23

  • v22 “son of man” = perfect mediator between God and humanity
  • v23 “after THEM” warning about following the CROWD instead of following the LORD

We Wait For The Wrong Event
Luke 17:24-26

  • v24 His day will be when Jesus brings humanity and God together at last
  • v25 He did this at the cross
  • v26 He will do it again at His second coming; like Noah’s day, we won’t be watching

2 Kings 5:8-14 Just like Naaman was upset that the man of God didn’t kowtow to his own self-importance, most of humanity will miss the work that God is doing among us – the quiet surrender of Self to the Kingdom of God
