Gems from Genesis: God Reveals His Purpose

Gems from Genesis: God Reveals His Purpose Sermon Audio Here

Gen.45:5-8; Rom.11:30-32

When preparing to view the upcoming eclipse, remember: You can’t focus directly on the event, but must take intentional steps to view what’s actually happening (or you’ll damage your eyes).

To Prevent Being Caught By Our Point Of View, Remember:

Our Problems Don’t Prevent God’s Purpose ~
Genesis 45:1-15
summarize Joseph’s Egyptian adventures; moral found in 5-8:

  • 5 “not yourselves – God sent me” Do we make dumb decisions at times? OF COURSE; do they prevent God from doing what He wishes? IN NO WAY
  • 7 “a great deliverance” Sometimes God intervenes; sometimes we play right into His plans without our knowledge
  • 8 “it was not you” God’s plans for our lives aren’t thwarted by our free will… and our free will isn’t thwarted by God’s plans!

God’s Purpose Is To Proclaim Himself ~ Romans 11:1-2, 29-32
Paul’s questions about God’s people

  • 1/2 Did God reject His promises to Israel in sending Jesus? NO; Jesus is the fulfillment of all God’s promises to both Jews and Gentiles GOD KEEPS HIS WORD
  • 29 What God promised to Israel, He will deliver, just as He has delivered us through Christ GOD PROTECTS HIS PLAN
  • 30/31 “their disobedience”=Israel was to be a kingdom of priests to share God’s love with the nations (Ex.19:6; Deut.7:6-8) we receive grace because God chose to give it to us; that makes us chosen as well as Israel GOD PROVIDES A PURPOSE
  • 32 our relationship with God isn’t based on what great things we’ve done; it isn’t severed by what awful things we’ve done. God loves us because of who HE is, not who we are. It’s not that we’re lovable; it’s that He is loving towards us. GOD’S WILL WILL WIN

That means that no matter how badly we screw up (and we do), it doesn’t prevent God from accomplishing His plans and using us to do them. IN fact, when God uses broken people, we recognize that something more than just the triumph of the human spirit is at work: God is showing off!

Gems from Genesis: God Is Aware of Our Situation

Gems from Genesis: God Is Aware of Our Situation Sermon Audio Here

Gen. 37:12-28/Rom. 10:5-15

tools needed at beginning of the job/items packed before you leave on vacation. Hindsight doesn’t help when you’re stuck at the BEGINNING of a problem!

Faith Isn’t An Infallible Shield

Righteousness Doesn’t Automatically Protect Us ~ Genesis 37:1-17

  • Summary: Joseph is naïve AND seventeen: doesn’t self-censor, doesn’t think about the impact that his truth will have on those around him.
  • Just because we try to do the right things doesn’t mean that we’ll never experience rough times; righteousness is not armor. We’re not guaranteed that if we’re good, we’ll never experience the bad. Let’s face it: there are bent people who do bad things, and we can get caught in the crossfire.

Belief Doesn’t Always Lead To Prosperity ~ Genesis 37:18-24

  • 18/20 Joseph is clueless about the trap he’s walking into
  • 21/22 Joe has unexpected ally, but not a strong one
  • 23/28 Joe still gets stuck in bad situation
  • We can honestly and sincerely believe the best of people, and still be badly let down

Being Saved Isn’t Just About Eternity ~ Romans 10:5-15

  • 5/9 Our salvation isn’t a reward for what we do; it’s who we trust
  • 10 we ARE (present tense) saved, not just saved from our past, or saved for our future
  • 11/13 our status doesn’t count; our background doesn’t count; our old self need not weigh us down, and we don’t need to worry about pretending to be perfect
  • We’re rescued right now for real life today; not just in the sweet by-and-by

Faith IS a shield (Ps.91:4, Eph.6:16) but just HAVING the shield doesn’t protect you. Use it: you WILL take the hit; but you are protected in ways you can’t comprehend!

Gems from Genesis: God Is Willing To Wrestle

Gems from Genesis: God Is Willing To Wrestle Sermon Audio Here

Genesis 32:22-31

The story is told of a scrawny kid in a small school with no wrestling program. He asked a football coach to enter him into regional matches, and the kid won every match because he wouldn’t let go. At the end of the season, this kid gets to state, and faces the two-time state champ. He’s about to get pinned; the coach can’t look. Next thing you know, the kid won! Coach asked how: kids says “that guy had me twisted like a pretzel, and I never give up. I saw a big toe, and bit into it with all my strength. Coach, it’s amazing what you can do when you BITE YOUR OWN TOE!”
Some reactions are surprising!

When God Shows Up…

Respond To The Struggle ~ Genesis 32:22-31

  • 27 Jacob says his name, grasper/deceiver; DON’T HIDE TRUTH
  • The Lord didn’t ask the question in order to get information, because He certainly knew Jacob’s name and that Jacob had the reputation of being a schemer and a deceiver. “What is your name?” meant, “Are you going to continue living up to your name, deceiving yourself and others; or will you admit what you are and let Me change you?” In the Bible, receiving a new name signifies making a new beginning. {Warren W. Wiersbe – Be Authentic (Genesis 25-20)}

Submit to God’s Changing You

  • 28 God changes our name; LIVE IN THE NEW YOU
  • One result of this meeting with God is that Jacob’s name is changed to Israel, which in the explanation given is connected with a Hebrew verb meaning “to contend with, strive.” As with Abraham in chapter 17, a new name indicates a new destiny. {Baker Commentary}
  • This applies to YOU as well: Isaiah 62 promises that God’s people will get a new name, and Revelation 2 confirms it: God knows your old name, but loves you enough to change it (and you)

Admit Who God Is To You

1 Peter 2:9 says:
You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Gems from Genesis: God Watches Our Choices

Gems from Genesis: God Watches Our Choices Sermon Audio Here

Gen.29:15-28; Rom.8:26-28

Jami and I went on a mini-vacation the beginning of this week. We visited family, and on our last day, we thought it would be nice to have barbecue for dinner. We did our research, found the barbecue place with good reviews, drove to that town… and could not find the restaurant. After searching on our own for a while, we went to a neighboring business and asked, only to discover: the business was hidden BEHIND another business… but it didn’t matter because it was closed that day anyway!

Hold Your Plans Loosely, Because

Our Plans Don’t Always Pan Out ~
Genesis 29:21-28

  • SETUP 15/18 Jacob (trickster) wants to marry Rachel  19/20 no tricks: works for 7 years
  • 21 time’s up: let’s get married!
  • 22/24 Father-in-law tricks the trickster!
  • 25 Jacob is indignant!
  • 26/28 Jacob gets Rachel a week later (for another 7 years of work)

Our Ignorance Doesn’t Block God’s Influence ~
Romans 8:26-28

  • 26 “We do not know what we ought” – We can’t know the complete end game
  • 27 Spirit in us is working WITH God’s plan
  • 28 God isn’t surprised by our choices: He KNOWS what’s going on

Rest of Jacob’s marriage story: he ends up the father of 12 boys: the 12 tribes of Israel, INCLUDING the line through which Jesus is born!

God Calls Us; that means God is prepared to bring about His purpose for our lives… even when we don’t know it yet! Therefore: RELAX: God’s got this!

Gems from Genesis: God Knows Our Need

Gems from Genesis: God Knows Our Need Sermon Audio Here

Genesis 24:42-49

I saw a news report a while ago about exoskeletons: powered robotic suits that enable the body to do what it cannot do on its own. Medical uses include physical therapy and helping the paralyzed to walk again, while military uses focus more on enhancing already present abilities. But for these to be effective, one thing is most important: to determine the actual NEED that the exoskeleton would fulfill…

If God Knows Our Need, What’s OUR Part?

We Look For The Lord At Work ~
Genesis 24:1-41

  • SETUP: 1-9: Abraham charges his servant to go back to the old country to get a wife for Isaac
  • 10-14 How to choose? Lord, let the right girl do THIS…
  • 15-28 She did!
  • 29-41 She takes servant to meet the family and he tells his story, which is where we pick up the text:

Genesis 24:42-44

  • 42 “if you will” – remember GOD’s agenda
  • 43/44 rely on GOD’s GUIDANCE (Gideon’s fleece: Judges 6)

We Act WITHIN God’s Work ~ Genesis 24:45-49

  • 45/46 God knows our need (often before we do)
  • 47/48 Thank God AS He provides (right in the middle of occurrence)
  • 49 Involve others in God’s work (“this is what I think God is doing, what do you think?)

Romans 7:22-25a: For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God– through Jesus Christ our Lord!

We have to remember that our flesh wants to go its own way; we can WANT to be Godly in our hearts, but our lives are stuck in a sinful world. God knows this; the Lord knows we want to be better than we are, and has provided a way to make that happen: Jesus Christ our Lord! As we submit to His Lordship and let Him lead us, His righteousness is placed on us, like a exoskeleton, enabling us to do with Him what we couldn’t do alone.

Gems from Genesis: God Hears Our Laughter

Gems from Genesis: God Hears Our Laughter Sermon Audio Here

Genesis 18:1-15

Long-time actress and comedienne Gracie Allen once received a small, live alligator as a gag. Not knowing what to do with it, Gracie placed it in the bathtub and then left for an appointment. When she returned home, she found this note from her maid: “Dear Miss Allen: Sorry, but I have quit. I don’t work in houses where there is an alligator. I’d a told you this when I took on, but I never thought it would come up.

What Happens When God Shows Up On Your Doorstep?

D.A.D. (Do what Abraham Did) ~ Genesis 18:1-8

  • v1/2 identify God’s presence (who are the three men? Trinity? [no – vs 22, 2:13 shows the LORD+2 angels])
  • v3 invitation to stay (we invite God to stay with us)
  • v4 inducement to rest (we interact with God in HIS terms)
  • v5 insistence of service (we offer real-world benefits to God – feed the poor)
  • v6/7 inclusion of others [wife, servant] (our spirituality isn’t intended to be private and singular; involve others in serving God)
  • v8 wait on the Lord

Be Ready For The Unexpected ~ Genesis 18:9-15

  • v9/10 God prepares us for the unexpected
  • v11/12 unexpected can cause disbelief
  • v13/14 disbelief opportunity for reminder: God CAN
  • v15 God knows our fear; works with us anyway

Romans 5:1-2 ~ Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

Covenant Concepts ~ Noah: God Will Remember

Covenant Concepts ~ Noah: God Will Remember Sermon Audio Here

Genesis 9:8-17/1 Peter 3:18-22

To start this new series based on Covenant Concepts, we need to realizes that Covenants are agreements between stronger and weaker parties. Just like when a person borrows money to purchase a home, they go to the bank (the stronger party in this instance because they have the money) and agree to pay them more money over a long period of time because they do not currently have sufficient cash to purchase the house. The relationship between the strong party (the bank) and the weak party (the home-buyer) are defined by the terms of the covenant. God does this with us; He provides ways for us to understand Him through the use of covenant. Why does God use this format?

God Frames Relationships With Covenant Concepts

God Remembers Us In Faithfulness
Gen.9:8-17

  • v8-10 God’s faithfulness is for EVERYONE
  • v11-13 God’s faithfulness reassures us
  • v14-17 God does not forget (Heb 6:10)
  • bow as token is for US to remember that God will not forget – the definition of faithfulness

=> Mark Twain and his friend William Dean Howells stepped out of church just as a violent rainstorm began. Howells said, “I wonder if it will stop”; and Mark Twain replied, “It always has.”

God Redeems Us In Authority
1 Peter 3:18-22

  • v21 Baptism is a symbolic act of covenant; we agree that we are unable to save ourselves
  • v22 God raised Jesus; we will be raised because of our connection to Christ

Remember: God Is Faithful; He Does NOT forget us. God is Able; He Does Not abandon us.
