Gems from Genesis: God Knows Our Attitudes

Gems from Genesis: God Knows Our Attitudes Sermon Audio Here

Gen. 25:19-34; Rom. 8:9-11

I’ve had a pretty significant wobble in my car at 50+mph; Auto place EXAMINED car, found two problems- worn tire, alignment issue. Fixed both issues, drives like new!

Learning What God Already Knows: We Are

Short Sighted By Sinful Nature ~ Genesis 25:29-34

  • 19-28 SETUP: Isaac & Rebekah have twins, Esau and Jacob; Esau is daddy’s boy / Jacob is mamma’s boy
  • 29/30 Esau driven by hunger for food
  • 31 Jacob driven by hunger for status
  • 32 Esau ignores long term consequences
  • 33 Jacob manipulates Esau
  • 34 notice Biblical warning against Esau, but NOT Jacob; BOTH guys are making decisions according to their flesh. Esau doesn’t care about his family position; Jacob is a trickster.

Stable When We Stay In The Spirit ~ Romans 8:9-11

  • 9 controlled by spirit IF THIS CONDITION IS MET: RESIDE in the Spirit
  • 10 because=DIA, by means of, through: the Spirit works THROUGH us for righteousness
  • 11 “My house, my rules” The Spirit lives IN you: do you allow Him to be the master of the house?

God works with us IN SPITE of our attitudes in the flesh; but He’d rather we COOPERATE with the Spirit as we move through life.

Lent: Our Struggle

Lent: Our Struggle Sermon Audio Here

Romans 8:6-11

When your engine making weird noises, or your computer is behaving strangely, or there’s a sudden change in health status; It’s important to pay attention to what’s going on internally!

Why Is The Spiritual Life A Struggle?

We’re Stuck With Two States ~ Romans 8:6-8

  • v6 “mind of the flesh” to live according to that state; “mind of the Spirit” to live in the state of the Spirit
  • v7 description of the meat-minded: hostile/OPPOSED; it wants its OWN way, not God’s, and it CAN’T choose God on its own!
  • v8 NOT merely “controlled by” but IN THE FLESH; there’s no separation. We do NOT have a neutral nature that is somehow influenced by a bad fleshly side and a good godly side

we are either living led by the Spirit, or we are quite literally meat-heads

We’re Settled By One Spirit ~ Romans 8:9

  • v9 IF the Spirit lives in you, you aren’t “of the flesh”; Spirit brings life and peace to the spiritually dead (God breathed the Spirit-becomes a living soul); CONVERSELY, if the life lived isn’t of the Spirit, that means the Spirit isn’t present = meat-minded

If a person can’t live led by the Spirit, they’re lost

We’re Saved To Serve Forever ~ Romans 8:10-11

  • v10 NOTE: your body is dead because of sin whether you have the Spirit or not; all flesh dies. The point Paul makes here is that even though your meat-tent will pass away, what is YOU, your SELF, doesn’t need to: when you allow the Spirit to make Your life His HOME, He brings you to life, KEEPS you alive, and produces His righteousness IN you to show you it works
  • v11 God’s Spirit OVERRIDES death; we no longer need fear it, because we will live THROUGH/PAST it; our bodies will still fade, but they are merely temporary dwelling places for our SELVES which have been joined to the Spirit. And since the Spirit (our roommate in us) will live forever, so will we!

Ezekiel 37:14~ I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the LORD have spoken, and I have done it, declares the LORD.'”

God DESIRES to bring us to life: but we have to receive what He gives on His terms so we know HE is at work, not us.

Hebrews 4:12-16

Since all of Hebrews is really one sermon, we need to break it down into smaller chunks to get a good grasp on the Gospel found in it. This second sermon in Hebrews is part two of seven to look at this amazing book.

Jesus is ALSO Better Than:

Moses And The Sabbath
Heb. 3:1-6 – Jesus is better than Moses
Heb. 3:7-4:11 – Jesus is better than the Sabbath

Our Hearts and Our Actions
Heb. 4:12-13

  • v12 word=logos; cf John 1:1; God IN ACTION is Jesus;
    • these vs describe Judgment; He KNOWS what He is doing
    • Jesus is BETTER than our Hearts
  • v13 We cannot hide our behavior from God; He judges it all
    • (cf. Rev. 20.11-15) Jesus is BETTER than our Actions

Our Old Ways
Heb. 4:14-16

  • v14 Jesus is BETTER than Old Religion;
    • The ultimate priest: represents man to God, God to man
  • v15 Jesus is BETTER than our FLESH
    • (He was flesh, but did not sin; not because He was “God-brained” or some heretical mixture of godhood and humanity; but because of His Obedience to the Father)

According to verse 16, Jesus’ obedience gives US access to God’s Throne; God does not expect us, in our own strength, to earn His love and forgiveness; it’s not possible. Our need for redemption is beyond our ability to pay: Thank God that Jesus is BETTER than our need!!

James 3:1-12

Rabies, the viral disease, is treatable if caught BEFORE symptoms show; once symptomatic, the disease is almost always fatal. Once that virus takes hold in the flesh, drastic measures are needed.

Those Fixed On The Flesh

Ignore A Shortage of Self-Control
James 3:1-5

  • v1 judged BY GOD (remember last week- we don’t judge)
  • v2 we’re all in this together – there are many ways of stumbling
  • v3/4 control is the issue; who’s really in control?
  • v5 small things can get out of control quickly

Believe Personal Superiority Is Sufficient
James 3:6-12

  • v6 “course of life”=wheel of nature; left unchecked, can throw your whole world off course
  • v7/8 man tames animals because of superiority; who is superior to man?
  • v9/10 what do WE do with speech?
  • v11/12 “flow” – GUSH, under pressure. What comes out of you when you’re under pressure?
  •      SALT – Dead Sea spring – is your water dead, or Living Water?

When we fill our lives with the Living Water, what comes out of us is life-filled. Our speech becomes the means that others are refreshed, and drawn to God at work in us.
