Posts from 1 Peter: Hope is Alive

Posts from 1 Peter: Hope is Alive Sermon Audio Here

1 Peter 1:3-9

Last week, we talked about the fact that if Jesus is Risen, we’re risen, too! But what does that MEAN? What makes that WORK? Hope, for one thing…

Hope is Alive Because…

Jesus is Alive! ~ 1 Peter 1:3-5

  • v3 When we’re connected to Christ, we are Reborn; hope is the result
  • v4 our hope isn’t on things that decay; the reason for our hope is timeless
  • v5 WE are shielded from decay; we’ll still experience the effects of entropy while we’re stuck here, but WE, our SELVES, have been connected to the Resurrected One – and we TOO are resurrected in hope!

=> my hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness!

Suffering is Temporary ~ 1 Peter 1:6-7

  • v6 in this: the shielding, even through current suffering; we recognize that all our earthly life is just a temporary situation
  • v7 WHEN you come through tough times (and notice I say WHEN and not if), you’ll be able to look back and give God glory for how the Lord sustained you… because you’ll see how you were changed to be like Christ

=> in Army, I heard guys whining about how tough the obstacle course was, and all I could think was how it was just for a short time. I figured I could probably experience the worst that Hell had to offer… as long as I knew it was temporary, and that I could have pizza afterwards…

Joy is Real ~ 1 Peter 1:8-9

Are we there yet? ALMOST!

Raised With Christ!

Raised With Christ! Sermon Audio Here

Colossians 3:1-4

If you join a sports team, you are expected at practice. If you join the cast of a show, you are expected at rehearsal. What is expected of you if you join with Christ?

Every Who Loves God Faces Four Challenges:

1] Set Your HEART
v1 “since then” refers to those who fulfill condition in Col. 2:12:
2:12: [You were] buried with Him in baptism and raised with Him through your faith in the power of God, who raised Him from the dead.

3:1: Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
What do you LONG for?

2] Set Your MIND
v2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
What do you DWELL on?

We all know the importance of correct settings: a mechanic uses Top Dead Center; a navigator uses North on a map. Our spiritual lives have settings, too; and when we try to set them according to our own whims instead of God’s standards, is it any wonder that we, too, get lost?

3] Let Your LIFE HIDE
v3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
What do you CRAVE that you need to let go?

4] Let Your LORD BE SEEN
v4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Whose glory have you been seeking?

We talked about settings, but what about LETTINGS? We have to admit that at times, we have to allow OTHERS to do for us: we don’t perform our own surgery. It’s good to let our SELF stop pretending it’s in control.

Jeremiah 31:3~ The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.”

The Lord fulfills that promise IN YOU; God loves you, and the Lord is drawing you even today.

Luke 17:20-26

Let’s be honest: we pray every week for God’s Kingdom to be known on earth. Does the world in which we live remind you of life in Heaven? Why not?

We Hold Back The Coming Kingdom When

We Watch For The Wrong Signs
Luke 17:20-21

  • v20 Pharisees used same words, but different meanings; they understood the Kingdom of God to be a political victory over opposinging forces
  • v21 Jesus sets them straight: the KoG is INSIDE, not outside; it’s about voluntary surrender to the King of Heaven, not forced submission to a stronger external force

We Want The Wrong Person
Luke 17:22-23

  • v22 “son of man” = perfect mediator between God and humanity
  • v23 “after THEM” warning about following the CROWD instead of following the LORD

We Wait For The Wrong Event
Luke 17:24-26

  • v24 His day will be when Jesus brings humanity and God together at last
  • v25 He did this at the cross
  • v26 He will do it again at His second coming; like Noah’s day, we won’t be watching

2 Kings 5:8-14 Just like Naaman was upset that the man of God didn’t kowtow to his own self-importance, most of humanity will miss the work that God is doing among us – the quiet surrender of Self to the Kingdom of God

Luke 12:22-34

Frederick the Great of Prussia once visited a school, and singled out a little girl, held up a stone in front of her, and asked, “To which kingdom does this stone belong?” “To the mineral kingdom,” came the quick reply. “And to which kingdom does this apple belong?” “To the plant kingdom.” Next the king pointed to the picture of a horse and asked her to classify the horse. “It belongs to the animal kingdom,” said the girl. Then, after a pause, the king demanded, “And to which kingdom do I belong?” Now the girl hesitated. Finally, she answered, “You belong to the kingdom of God.” The king was deeply moved by this unexpected reply and said to the girl, “Pray God that I may be found worthy of such an honor.”

Anyone who accepts the work that Jesus has done on the cross can be a part of that Easter Kingdom.

As A Part of the Easter Kingdom, We Can See That:

He is Lord of Everyday Life
Luke 12:22-24~ don’t worry about stuff

  • v22 Jesus’ focus: don’t worry about life
  • v23 Life is MORE than stuff (cf. Abundant Life John 10:10)
  • v24 how valuable are you? Do you agree with God on this?

=> If you had a bank that credited your account each morning with $86,400, that carried no balance from day to day, allowed you to keep no cash in your account, and finally every evening canceled whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day. what would you do? Draw out every cent–of course!
Well, you have such a bank and its name is “Time.” Every morning it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it rules off–as lost–whatever of this you had failed to invest to good purpose.

He is Lord of Common Time
Luke 12:25-28~ how do you spend your time?

  • v25 we are not in control
  • v26 what is impossible for us is a little thing to God
  • v27/28 God cares for you because of who HE is

He is Lord of Constant Care
Luke 12:27-31~ think about how God values you

  • v29/30 God knows your needs
  • v31 Agree with God about His priorities

=> Queen Victoria, after hearing one of her chaplains preach on the second coming of Christ, said, “Oh, how I wish that the Lord would come during my lifetime.” When asked why, she replied, “Because I should so love to lay my crown at His feet.”

He is Lord of Everlasting Hope
Luke 12:32-34~ let go of stuff; hold onto God

  • v32 We don’t trust God because of FEAR; yet God trusts US
  • v33 trade your old stuff for PERMANENT treasure
  • v34 your heart is connected to your stuff (how do you define yourself?); Jesus reminds us to be connected to GOD, and let HIM define us

Think about your daily life: how do you spend your common time? Are you burdened with constant care over what you feel you need? Let go of anything that weighs you down, and be lifted in the Hope of the Risen Savior. Set your mind and heart on God’s trust in you to live as a citizen of Heaven right here, right now.

Up From The Grave He Arose!

Isaiah 25:6-9; John 20:19-31

For many children, the highlight of Easter morning is the Easter Basket. For many parents, the choices on what to put IN the Easter Basket are overwhelming. While retailers put pastel colored candy and toys front and center, other voices advocate for different choices: art supplies instead of candy; vegan alternatives to eggs; even replacing the basket itself with a backpack or canvas storage container.

All of this attention on what’s in the Easter basket begs the question:

What Does God Give Us on Easter?

The Promise of Restoration ~ Isa. 25:6-9

  • v7 we are shrouded- covering of death
  • v8 we WILL be restored- tears wiped away
  • v9 let us rejoice- our intentional response

The Peace in Reception ~ John 20:19-23

  • v19 we can choose to live in fear
  • v20 we can choose to look at the Lord instead
  • v21/22/23 we can have peace when we receive what Jesus gives

The Principle of Reliance ~ John 20:24-31

  • v24/25 we tend to rely on ourselves
  • v26/27 Jesus knows our tendency for self-reliance
  • v28/29 reliance upon God is a blessing
  • v30/31 reliance upon God gives us life-removes the shroud

Are you living under a shroud? Is your self-reliance keeping you from life? Jesus rolled away the stone and left His shroud behind; He can do it for YOU, too!

The Messiah’s Ministry: Life Over Death

Matthew 28:1-10

Audio of April 20, 2014 sermon

One of the best privileges of being a minister is seeing new life at the altar; bride & groom becoming one; mourning families realizing their loved one is with Jesus; watching the face of a baby as she’s baptized and the family’s response – coming to the altar is a recognition that we aren’t alone, that God works with us to help us recognize that we are NOT Him!

An “Altared” Life Engages

* God’s Work in Our Sorrow
1-4 Dealing with the unexpected
v1 went to look at the Tomb
v2 earth-shaking effects will happen
v3/4 some can’t handle God’s work

* Our Work in God’s Scenario
5-7 Responding to the Master’s Plan
v5 remember: do not be afraid
v6 investigate: come and see
v7 share: go and tell

* Our Walk with God’s Savior
8-10 Living with a new nature
v8 fill with joy
v9 come to worship
v10 expect to see

Jesus’ life and teaching shows us the character of God and the nature of His Kingdom; Jesus’ death on the cross paid the ultimate price for our sin; Jesus’ Resurrection means that we, like Christ, have NEW LIFE that will last forever! What will you experience as you walk with Jesus?
