Lingering in Worship: Enacting

Lingering in Worship: Enacting

Ezra 10:1-6; Hebrews 13:7-16

If we’re going to linger in worship, that means we’re planning on being in God’s presence. THAT means we have to deal with sin, because God will not tolerate sin in His presence.

Can We Surrender Our Sin In God’s Presence?

Learn the Previous Pattern for Repentance  ~ Ezra 10:1-6

  • 1 Serious Remorse in the face of sin
  • 2/4 Costly Repentance to align with the Law
  • 5/6 Solemn Recognition to deal with consequences

=> remember, OT narratives do NOT need to be reenacted exactly the same way today (cf. 1Cor 7:12-16); our responsibility is to find what will thoroughly equip us (2Tim 3.16)

Trust the Permanent Partnership For Redemption  ~ Hebrews 13:7-16

  • 7 Our task today: CONSIDER & IMITATE FAITH (not method)
  • 8 God does not change; our circumstances do- so should our responses
  • 9 GRACE not LAW for growth
  • 10/14 go beyond the Law to the Lord
  • 15/16 we still sacrifice! Not paganism, but praise; not sanctions, but SELFishness

SIN is two things: 1) our broken nature, which we can’t fix (but Jesus already has); and 2) the choices we make based on our nature, which we CAN FIX. Ask yourself: what choices am I making to cope with God’s presence?

Faith Isn’t An Infallible Shield

Righteousness Doesn’t Automatically Protect Us ~ Genesis 37:1-17

  • Summary: Joseph is naïve AND seventeen: doesn’t self-censor, doesn’t think about the impact that his truth will have on those around him.
  • Just because we try to do the right things doesn’t mean that we’ll never experience rough times; righteousness is not armor. We’re not guaranteed that if we’re good, we’ll never experience the bad. Let’s face it: there are bent people who do bad things, and we can get caught in the crossfire.

Belief Doesn’t Always Lead To Prosperity ~ Genesis 37:18-24

  • 18/20 Joseph is clueless about the trap he’s walking into
  • 21/22 Joe has unexpected ally, but not a strong one
  • 23/28 Joe still gets stuck in bad situation
  • We can honestly and sincerely believe the best of people, and still be badly let down

Being Saved Isn’t Just About Eternity ~ Romans 10:5-15

  • 5/9 Our salvation isn’t a reward for what we do; it’s who we trust
  • 10 we ARE (present tense) saved, not just saved from our past, or saved for our future
  • 11/13 our status doesn’t count; our background doesn’t count; our old self need not weigh us down, and we don’t need to worry about pretending to be perfect
  • We’re rescued right now for real life today; not just in the sweet by-and-by

Faith IS a shield (Ps.91:4, Eph.6:16) but just HAVING the shield doesn’t protect you. Use it: you WILL take the hit; but you are protected in ways you can’t comprehend!

Bread From Heaven: Derailed by the Details

John 6:56-69

On July 24, 2013, a train carrying 218 people in eight carriages derailed in northwestern Spain, killing 79 people and hospitalizing another 66. Shortly after the wreck, the driver, Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, told officials, “I can’t explain it. I still don’t understand how I didn’t see …. I just don’t know.” He said the journey was “going fine” until the train hit a curve. At that point Garzon said to himself, “Oh my God, the curve, the curve, the curve. I won’t make it.”
Despite Garzon’s initial confusion and surprise, there is a simple explanation for the crash. Video footage revealed that the train was going as fast as 119 mph before it hit the deadly curve. That’s more than twice the speed limit for that section of the track. So it wasn’t just the speed that caused the accident. It was the combination of the speed and the location of the track. The train was designed to reach speeds of over 130 mph. But Garzon, who was a 30-year employee of Spain’s national rail company, simply ignored the boundaries in which those high speeds were to be used.

To Keep From Being Derailed By The Details

Remember It’s Not SUPPOSED to be Easy!
John 6:60-64

  • v60 It IS hard, make no mistake!
  • v61 Jesus KNOWS it’s hard for us
  • v62 What kind of proof do you require to trust?
  • v63 fleshly “proof” doesn’t count; trust the Spirit
  • v64 Not all will believe; Jesus knows this

Don’t Fight God’s Direction
John 6:65-69

  • v65 God enables us to follow Jesus
  • v66 if it’s merely our idea, we’ll fade away
  • v67 remember: Jesus takes our belief PERSONALLY
  • v68 What’s our alternative? NOTHING
  • v69 Reaffirm our faith: Jesus is the Messiah

Let us reaffirm our faith by using the Apostle’s Creed, a short-hand summation of what was taught by the Apostles about Jesus the Messiah.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
     creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
     He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
     was crucified, died, and was buried;
     he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
     He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
     the holy catholic* church,
     the communion of saints,
     the forgiveness of sins,
     the resurrection of the body,
     and the life everlasting. Amen.

*that is, the true Christian church of all times and all places
