Roaming Through Romans: Humility Transformed

Roaming Through Romans: Humility Transformed Sermon Audio Here

Romans 12:1-8

When I was a new Christian, much of my spiritual formation was shaped by the music I found. One band’s album particularly stands out: Altar Boys: When You’re A Rebel was released in 1984. The title track helped me memorize Romans 12:2 by repetition, and became a foundational part of my Christian experience: “you got to make a stand; Cause we’re getting close to the end; Ya gotta say it like it is, man”. This has caused me many times over the years to consider HOW can my mind be renewed and transformed.

How Can You Change Your Mind?

Think About Thought ~ Romans 12:1-2
     introduction of transformed thought

  • 1 offer your bodies=stand and wait; spiritual act=logikon, reasonable; if we are engaged in worship, it is reasonable for us to fully engage
  • 2 “be conformed by” PASSIVE; we don’t often CHOOSE to do evil… rather, we’re warped by long-term exposure without resistance.
  • TO WHAT INFLUENCE DO YOU CONSISTENTLY AND FREQUENTLY EXPOSE YOURSELF? THAT is what will shape you!

Think THROUGH What You Do ~ Romans 12:3-5
     demonstration of transformed thought

  • 3 “think more highly” PUN don’t over-think your own importance
  • 4 it’s reasonable to understand that our body parts don’t all do the same thing
  • 5 PUN:Gk: al-lay’-lone=together We are DESIGNED to be a part of each other; we’re not nearly as autonomous as we’d like to think

Romans 12:6-8
     application of transformed thought

  • 6/8 charismata: manifestations of the Spirit’s presence. Since we’re all different, the Spirit will look different THROUGH each of us (like light through different lenses) cf. Matt. 5:16

Isaiah 1:15-20 / Luke 19:1-10

Ever seen the image of the guy wearing a sandwich board which reads repent the end is near? Ken Davis once asked “which end? How near?” (60 years ago!) The call to repent has been subverted so badly that it’s become an old joke. But repentance is no joke to God…

To Reclaim Repentance, We Realize That

Religious Duty Falls Short
Isaiah 1:15-20

  • v15 Just doing religion doesn’t get God’s attention; instead:
  • v16/17 God’s motive is the change of heart
  • v18/20 God’s method is challenge of the mind

Real Difference Result of Salvation
Luke 19:1-10

  • v1/4 Awakening: why would a tax collector want to see Jesus? There must have been something different, a hope for a different response
  • v5/6 Attraction: why would a rabbi want to spend time with Zacchaeus? God sees us through Jesus
  • v7/8 Apology: world rejects our change; we say “I choose to do differently”
  • v9/10 Acceptance: salvation has come isn’t the choice to do better; it’s the reception of Jesus! This PROMPTS us to change after – change is not demanded before the Spirit brings us to life

Stages of Repentance:

  • Awakening – the Spirit has worked in us before we even know it (God chooses us first)
  • Attraction – we are drawn to Christ as He draws near to us (Christ influences us next)
  • Apology – we reject our old ways, and resolve to make a change (We respond to Christ)
  • Acceptance – we realize our new life in Christ supersedes our life of self (we surrender to God’s influence)

God’s goal is to draw us to Deity; when we surrender our heart and are transformed in our mind, our lives will show the difference!
