Old Words for a New Time

In our “history cabinet”, there is a sign with the words, “Befiehl dem Herrn deine Wege”. Translated, it means “Entrust to the Lord your ways”. Apparently, this has been a crucial thought in our congregation for a LONG time. (Does anyone know when this sign was made? I’d love to know its history, if anyone knows about it.)

As I was working on the translation of the sign, I came across a song on the Bach Cantatas website, and I thought the English translation was worth reading:

Entrust your way and what grieves your heart to the most faithful care of him who governs heaven!
He who gives to the clouds, air and winds their way, course and path will also find a way where your feet can go.

In the Lord you must trust, if you are to prosper; you must look to his work, if your work is to stand firm.
God undertakes nothing through the cares, grief and pain you have for yourself, he must be entreated in prayer.

This really is the challenge of our time, isn’t it? To choose to focus, not on the world around us or the environment in which we live, but instead on the Lord and His Word, and to give over all our frustrations, reactions, temptations, and whatever else might stand in the way of making Christ known in our lives.

After all, we have a wonderful reminder of God’s faithfulness to us in 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 – “Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.”

So, as we move into the Easter season, let us live as Easter People, letting the light of Christ show in us so that people are drawn to the Father, and we are being changed into the likeness of the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit!
