Psalm 116 Prayer

Abstract of Psalm 116 As I was writing this prayer, I thought it might be helpful for other pastors, congregations, or students of prayer. It is one of my ongoing attempts to pray the Psalms back to God, to reclaim them as a prayerbook. I found this images from the website of Verna Brady, a gifted abstract artist. I’d recommend going to her site and reading through her notes on art theory. For use in congregational worship:

How can we repay the LORD for all his goodness to us? As we gather together this morning, we will lift up and call on the name of the LORD. LORD, we thank You for the privilege of coming into Your presence, of recognizing that You are here with us now. Right now, in this moment, we want to see You with our hearts, and hear You speak to us this day.

We love the LORD, because he has heard our voice and our pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to us, therefore we will call on him as long as we live.

WOMEN: Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful.

We all have made choices that have taken us away from Your ideal for us, Lord. We’ve decided to call our own shots, to be self-reliant to the extent that we ignore Your call to us to be like Christ. Our sin, all sin, results in death; we die a little inside every time we ignore the voice of the Spirit.

The snares of death encompassed us; the pangs of mourning laid hold on us; we suffered distress and anguish. Then we called on the name of the LORD: “O LORD, we pray, deliver our souls!”

MEN: Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful.

We thank you, God, that Your lovingkindess towards us has no end; there is no bottom to the ocean of grace You have for us. We thank You for reminding us that we cannot wander too far away from You; Your mercy draws us back and restores us.

The LORD preserves the simple; when we were brought low, he saved us. We can let go of our distress; for the LORD has dealt bountifully with us.

CHILDREN: Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful.

We lift up the faces and names and situations that You know concern us, Lord. We bring these people who are hurting, sick, desperate, lonely, or in need of Your special touch to the foot of Your Throne. You are King; move in Your sovereign will to work in their lives, so that Your name is lifted and glorified.

For you, God, have delivered our souls from death, our eyes from tears, our feet from stumbling; We will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

ALL: Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful.
